Buried Brilliance
16 x 20 in. | Mixed Media | Gold Floater Frame
I’ve always been obsessed with gold.
My mother’s family is Sicilian, and gold has been woven into my life for as long as I can remember. Birthday gifts, Christmas gifts, gold pieces of jewelry that became part of my heritage and my sense of family.
It's no coincidence that I keep burying gold into my paintings. I love the way it emerges from deep layers of color—something precious hiding inside something mysterious.
This piece was inspired by lapis lazuli, with its incredible blue and natural golden inclusions.
And there’s something magical about gold itself: it wasn’t created on Earth. Much of the gold in the universe was forged in violent cosmic events such as neutron-star collisions. The gold we wear is older than the Earth itself.
I think that's what I love about it most: something ancient and extraordinary, hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered.
